Originated in the Middle Ages, Guimarães was founded in the 10th century and its most famous landmark is the Guimarães Castle that dates back from this period. The city’s history is very much associated to the setting of a Portuguese identity and the birth of the Portuguese language in the 12th century.

Guimarães Historical centre is considered World Heritage by UNESCO, due to the highly skilled building techniques used during the Middle Ages.

In the 19th century, Guimarães stood out from the rest of the country due to the textile and tanning industries, which left visible marks in the city’s architecture, such as the Zona de Couros.

Another building of great historical importance is the Paço dos Duques de Bragança, built in the 15th century by King Afonso I, from Bragança.
